Fashion Design Entrance Examination

Fashion technology & design entrance test conducted to test the aptitude & communication skills, creative & analytical ability, understanding of business and quantitative & logical ability of the prospective candidates. Through some sections, candidates’ general knowledge and awareness in the areas of art and culture will also be tested. Fashion technology and designing are the two prominent and integral parts of the fashion industry. A course in fashion designing enables candidates to create attractive dress, footwear, etc. Fashion technology, on the other hand, is about creating fabrics from products like nylon, silk, cotton or polyester.

NIFT-National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Exam
NID- National Institute of Design Entrance Exam
PAF- Pearl Academy of Fashion Entrance Exam
Eligibility for Fashion Technology & Design Entrance Test

Eligibility criteria for fashion technology and design entrance exams vary from one institute to another and from one course to another. However, there are some common parameters that can be identified. These are as listed below:

For bachelor’s course in design - (Fashion Design / Leather Design / Accessory Design / Textile Design / Knitwear Design / Fashion Communication): Candidates need to pass 10+2 examination from a recognized education board/ institute. Those who have passed the General Certificate Education (GCE) test or any recognized foreign university/ public school examination can also apply for the entrance test conducted for this course. Candidates with 3 or 4 year AICTE approved diploma courses are also eligible to take entry level test. Usually, maximum age limit for the examination is 23 years.

For bachelor’s course in fashion technology - (Apparel Production): Candidates who have completed 10+2 examination from any recognized central or state level education board in subjects like maths, physics and chemistry can apply for this test. Those who have cleared the General Certificate Education (GCE) exam or any accredited foreign university/ public school test in maths, physics and chemistry can also sit for the test. Candidates holding AICTE approved 3 or 4 years diploma can also send a request for this test. The age limit is 23 years.

For master’s course in fashion management: Candidates with bachelor’s degree or equivalent level of education in any stream such as Accessory / Fashion Design / FIT from a recognized institute can appear in the entrance test conducted for this course.

For master’s course in design: (Master of Design) Candidates planning to pursue this course through entrance exam need to have an accredited bachelor’s degree in any of the disciplines including Fashion Design/ Visual Communication/ Graphic Design/ Industrial Design/ Interior Design/ Multimedia Design/ Product Design/ Textiles & Accessories. Fine Arts or B.Arch. students are also eligible for the test. Further, B.Sc candidates from textiles and clothing background can also apply for a test conducted for this course.

For master’s course in fashion technology: (Master of Fashion Technology) Candidates with B.E. / B.Tech degrees in the fields of Textiles / Mechanical / Apparel / Industrial / Electronics / Production / Computer / Information Technology can apply for an entrance test conducted for this course.

Additionally, those who possess relevant working experience in the fields of Fashion/ Communication Design/ Textile are likely to get an edge over the others.
Application Procedure for Fashion Technology & Design Entrance Test

Admission notification and information on the issue of application form for entrance examinations in this field are announced in the country’s prominent dailies. Interested candidates can also apply for these exams through online. In that case, they need to visit official website of the concerned authority to download forms. Whether an applicant sends an online request or submits the form at designated places, he or she should perform all registration formalities within the stipulated period of time. Late entries or submission of incomplete application forms are not entertained.
Fashion Technology & Design Entrance Test Format

Almost every fashion technology and design entrance exam has its own set of syllabus for aspiring candidates. But, some areas where similarities in the test pattern can be spotted are mentioned below. These are:

1. Communication ability: The section comprises phrases, idioms, spelling correction, antonyms, synonyms and permutation & combination among others.

2. Quantitative aptitude: The category includes questions on addition, division, multiplication, interest rate, ratio & proportion, profit & loss, geometry, algebra, calculus, probability & statistics, equations, distance, fractions and basics of computer application among others.

3. General knowledge: The section will test candidates’ awareness about latest trends in the fields of art and culture.
